After seeing all this, will he still want to change places and give all that up?

This is another book we think does a great job of introducing the differences between night and day. We especially love this one not only because the Sun and the Moon are the main characters, but also because it allows children to explore different, wonderful things that happen at nighttime. Why the Sun and the Moon Live in the Sky Book Cover

Why the Sun and Moon Live in the Sky
Elphinstone Dayrell

Age: 4-7

Sun and his wife, Moon, used to live on the Earth. They had a large house, and humans were able to visit them. But so many people came that they were forced to move to the sky. This Caldecott Honor Book reinterprets an African folktale about the Moon and the Sun.
It’s common for children to wonder how things came to be, and folktales are a great way to explore these questions. This book, in particular, explores the relationship between the Moon and the Sun and why they are so far up in the sky. We also think it’s great to introduce children to a diverse range of books from different cultures, so this is a great opportunity to speak to children about how different cultures have different ideas and different traditional tales.

Moon Facts for Kids

If you are ready to learn more about the moon, get reading! In the meantime, here are some interesting moon facts for kids to get you and your family started learning about one of the most important parts of our solar system.

The Moon’s surface is full of craters.

Over time, numerous comets and asteroids have hit the moon’s surface. The craters remain because the Moon does not have the same kind of weather that the Earth does.

The Moon gets really hot and really cold.

During the day, when the Moon is facing the sun, its surface gets up to 107 degrees Celsius–that’s more than boiling! At night, when the Moon faces away from the sun, its surface can drop below -153 degrees Celcius–that’s more than freezing!

The Moon affects the movement of the ocean.

The tides that pull the ocean in and out of shore are caused by the Moon and its gravitational pull.

The Moon does not produce its own light.

Even though the Moon shines brightly, it doesn’t actually produce its own light. The light that you see is actually the Moon reflecting light from the Sun.

You’d weigh less on the Moon.

How much you weigh depends on how much gravity there is pushing you down. The moon has about one sixth of the amount of gravity the Earth has, meaning you’d way far less if you were standing on the Moon.

Some scientists believe that the Moon was originally part of the Earth.

Although we don’t know exactly how the Moon was formed, some scientists think that 4.5 billion years ago, a planet-sized rock called Theia crashed into the Earth and that all the pieces of rock that went flying clumped together to make the Moon.

It takes 27.3 days for the Moon to orbit the Earth.

It takes almost a month for the Moon to go completely around the Earth. As it moves, it looks slightly different, creating the appearance of different phases of the moon.

The Moon is about a quarter the size of the Earth.

The Moon is about 3,476 km in diameter, whereas the Earth is about 12,742 km.

The Moon is about 384,403 km away from the Earth.

That’s about 238,857 miles. The astronauts who made it to the moon must have had a pretty long trip!

The Moon is the only thing that naturally orbits the Earth.

Although humans have created satellites that go around the Earth, the Moon is the only thing that naturally orbits our planet.
